This
page is dedicated to on-line debates where each month we will take a
new topic and give the arguments to both sides of the topic. The first
debate, is set up between myself, David Swierzbiolek (Involved with
the DAV for 6 years as a debater and adjudicator), and Daniel Grigg
(currently studying Politics). My wish is to have feedback from
people, and maybe even have an on-line debating competition. In this
topic both Daniel and I will be looking at the upcoming election and
giving arguments to support each side. Daniel will be taking the side
of the Liberal party, while I will be arguing the point of view of the
labor party. (note: This does not reflect either persons political
views).
TOPIC:
WHO WILL WIN A ELECTION IF DECIDING THE WINNER WAS DONE
PURELY ON THESE SPEECHES.
The nationalist People Party of Australia (David)
POLITICAL SPEECH - (RUNNING FOR AN ELECTION)
Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen,
I stand here today, as the leader, of the Nationalist People Party,
but tomorrow, here as the representative of the people of our great
country.
FOR YEARS, we have voted and elected political parties, politicians
who have said that they will represent the people, but all they have
delivered is a personal agenda which has only looked after their own.
Well! Today that changes! It changes for everyone, and as the voting
public, it is up to you to finally take that big step forward and stop
the rut which we have become used to. It is time for a change. It is
time for their AGENDA TO BE SCRAPPED!
It is now time for the country, our country, Australia, to be
represented by a political party which is not here to look after their
own party, not here to fulfil their personal agenda, not here to lead
to country as the see, but to STOP! LISTEN! AND ACT! It is time for
the Nationalist People Party to come in and take control of the
situation, by presenting a party whose policies revolve around the
peoples wishes. It is time for us to stop and listen, and change will
happen! And it will be this change that I will deliver.
HOW! How will I do this! How will this political party change
happenings of the past! With one simple plan.
We, the nationalist People Party, want to produce one of the largest
questionnaires, if not the largest, that this country has ever seen.
This questionnaire will contain over two-hundred and fifty multiple
choice (a, b, c, d) questions, and close to two-hundred and fifty
yes / no questions giving a total of five-hundred questions for you
the public to answer. It will be these questions which will form the
basis of our party policies, and will give us reason to act on some
issues and not act on others. The questions will be divided up into
various sections, including health, education, defence, transport,
sport, entertainment, environment, foreigners, aboriginals, youth and
the elderly. Various questions will be asked under each section. These
will also be added sections which will be optional do, which will
either fall under individual state issues, international issues or
miscellaneous. The questionnaire will work like this. A question
like ‘Should troops be withdrawn from Iraq?’ If more than seventy-five
percent of Australia say yes, well the troops would be bought home.
But if their was not a majority of three out of every fourth person
saying yes, the troops would stay there. That is an example. We would
rate each question, so questions which had a ninety percent approval
would come first, moving down to those which have also be passed by
the public. We look at this as Australia as a whole, to have a say in
each decision made. With multiple choice questions, for example, If
the questions was ‘what should be the cost of University fees for HECS
paying students?’ answer might include (a) twenty-five percent of the
current cost of course fees, (b) fifty to seventy-five percent of
current cost of course fees, (c) course fees should stay the same, and
finally (d) HECS fees should raise by twenty-five percent. Now if
there is an even spread between answers, the system will stay the same
unless a reform is really needed, and the political party will make a
decision after deeply researching the issue, however if fifty percent
of Australians agree with answer b, or if b was 15 percent ahead on
votes over any of the other answers, we would act on that because that
is what the Australian public want.
We understand there are issues that may concern the Australian public.
These issues could be, how would the voting be done and when. Who can
vote of these issues and finally who would fund this questionnaire.
Issue number one would involve how would the voting be done, and when
will it take place. After the election you will be given a choice of
either logging onto an internet site and answering the questions over
a period of a month and sending your answers by email. The other
options are that a person can fax their answers after printing the
questionnaire off the internet site or going down to your local post
office when you can pick up a copy of the questionnaire. Each household will receive a copy of the questionnaire, with all the
members filling out their answers on the same questionnaire. To stop
people voting on numerous occasions, only one questionnaire will be
accepted by each household. This questionnaire will be done between
weeks two and six after the elections is held.
Issue number two is who can vote. If you are an Australian citizen,
between the age of eighteen to fifty-five, it will be compulsory to
fill out a questionnaire. This is to ensure that enough votes are
gathered to show Australia’s feelings on any particular issue. There
will also be a chance to vote if you are aged between fourteen and
seventeen, and over fifty - five, though this is not compulsory. This
is a chance for everyone to vote and help will be supplied for those
with limited access or limited availability to information about the
questionnaire. And for those who will try to avoid this, for whatever
reason, harsh penalties will apply, only because we want this to be a
real indication of Australia as a whole, and as Australian individuals
your thoughts on the main issues that effect our daily lives are
extremely important.
Issue number three, who will fund a project such as this? Well firstly
I will admit that invaluable as it is to gather the publics’ thoughts
on all the major issues affecting the Australian public, this project
will be quite expensive, with a cost of around $135,982,414. As most
Australians would agree, a policy like this would be fine if there was
not a major cost connected to it, and with the thought of where the
funds come from would definitely discourage this policy however I will
guarantee that though this is for the public to have a say, the
funding WILL NOT, come from the low earning taxpayer. We plan to fund
the $135,982,414 by taking a small % of high income salaries, which
will include Politicians, Judges, people in the entertainment business
and sports stars. The difference will be made up by using funds from
the taxation office and also a % of income from the State Governments
Police and Parking Fines.
It is time for this country to stop following like sheep. It is time
for the people of this country to have a chance to say how this
country should be run, and it is time to change the balance of power
in this country and under the Australian Nationalist Party, I guarantee the balance of power will change in favour of the people. It
is time to make a stand as an Australian, THAT STAND IS VOTING FOR THE
AUSTRALIAN NATIONALIST PEOPLE PARTY!

The Youth of the Liberals Party (Daniel)
I believe that I should be the next Prime Minister of this great
nation because of the fact that we The Youth of Liberals Party
believes it knows what people of this nation want. Australian's want -
Low Taxes / A better Health System and Better Educational Facilities
for our children. If elected I would foresee a plan to develop this
nation into a better country, with changes suitable for all people
