TIPS
FROM THE DAV ABOUT THIS TOPIC:
1. It's not about whether Australia has actually become the 51st
state of America, because we all know that's not true. It's about
whether Australia is so much like America that it could be
called the 51st State.
2. This is an "empirical debate". That's a fancy term for
a debate with "is" in the topic, about the current
situation. This isn't the kind of debate where you think up a model
for what should happen -- rather, you need to ask yourself "How
can we tell if Australia has (or hasn't) become the 51st State? What
ways do we have of telling?". It isn't enough to say that
Australia is (or isn't) like America in certain ways; you need to
convince the audience that it's so much like or unlike America that it
must be thought of as the 51st State (or not!).

AFFIRMATIVE:
(WHY HAS AUSTRALIA BECOME THE 51ST STATE OF AMERICA)
* JOINING THE IRAQ WAR: - Due to our involvement
in the Iraq War it is said that we very easily agreered to joining the
U.S. in an invasion which was not approved by the Australian public.
* THE FREE TRADE AGREEMENT: - The
recent decision on developing a free trade decision is taking a step
towards the U.S. and Australia having a state to state relationship
like New South Wales and Victoria. The free trade agreement sees the
usual taxes that would be added on overseas products being sold in in
another country being removed from the product.
* CLOSE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MR
J HOWARD AND MR G BUSH: - The relationship
between Mr Howard and Mr Bush is seemed to be a close one, where it
seems every time Mr Bush says something, Mr Howard on the behalf of
Australia agree to what is being said.

NEGATIVE:
(WHY HASN'T AUSTRALIA BECOME THE 51ST
STATE OF AMERICA)
*LIFESTYLE: - The lifestyle of
Australian's is looked at as pretty laid back with a weekend being
spent around the BBQ, firing up a steak, drinking a beer (VB),
listening to the Football. This compares the U.S. lifestyle which is
quite rushed. They enjoy their television and films and their daily
life is ran by corporations with advertising everywhere.
*SPORTS: - The traditional sports of
the U.S. and Australia quite different. The U.S.'s traditional sports
are Gridiron, Baseball and even Ice-Hockey in some parts of the country,
which are all sports which do not have a significant supporter base in
Australia. If Australia was the 51st state their would be a lot of simulars
between the two nations but Australians prefer their sports like
Australian Football, Cricket, Rugby and Netball which are closer to
the sports of England and New Zealand. Australia couldn't become the
51st of Australia because it has its own sporting culture, which is an
important part of life in Australia and they are related closer to
England than the U.S. because of this.
* SPORTING COMPETITION: - The sporting rivalry
between Australia and the U.S. separates the two countries. In sports
like Swimming, Baseball, Softball, Tennis..... their is a fierce rivalry
between the countries to beat each other in that sport. Unlike playing
countries like New Zealand and England in sport where rivalry is
because how close the countries are related the rivalry between
Australian and the U.S. is created through simply wanting to be better
than the other country.
